Satish Kumar in his great wisdom coined the phrase Soul, Soil and Society.
“We are not humans having a spiritual experience, we are soul having this human experience”
What is it that we mean by Soul and how do bring about ways to access it?
Soul is indefinable in words, yet is called by a thousand different names: Consciousness, God, Self, Atma, Spirit. It is the essence of everything, the breath of life, soul is limitless, eternal and deathless. And in fact can never be known through the intellect. Many people have difficulty with the word God or Soul, because it is loaded with history and bigotry. It is better to just find another word that suits you because it doesn’t change the fact that it is just a sign post and it is up to us to walk and experience what it is that is being spoken of.
So how do we access it? Through personal experience, only through experience.
What does that mean for us to do?
Practice, practice, practice.
Meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi, prayer, Self less service, devotion to whatever aspect of the divine resonates with you (Jesus, the Buddha etc), consciously being in nature. Some form of spiritual discipline must be practiced every single day.
There are so many incredible teachers, maybe you are one of them and if you aren’t yet then hopefully you will be very soon!
